I’ve never stayed in a resort during my many trips to Cabo, because I usually chose small, boutque hotels in Cabo that have fewer amenities but are more budget-friendly, which goes a long way in a place like Cabo, where prices are well above what you usually find in Mexico’s popular beach towns. 

That’s why I decided to write this article. If you are like me and traveling to Cabo to explore and take day trips from Cabo, instead of spending hundreds (or even thousands of dollars) on your accommodation, this article is for you.

The hotels I sourced below offer a good compromise between amenities (pools, fitness centers, and airport shuttles), a central location, and budget-friendly prices. They are less crowded, offer more personable service and are often outside of tourist zones.  

Staying in locally owned and operated hotels is a great way to support Cabo’s businesses instead of big resorts, that channel your money outside of Mexico and have little to no connection with the Cabo community.

Mayan Monkey is a perfect place to stay if you are traveling to Cabo by yourself and want to enjoy a social atmosphere. Even if you aren’t traveling alone, Mayan Monkey is a great place to stay. It has a shared kitchen, a 24-hour front desk, a terrace.

It also can help you book guided tours in Cabo.

 There’s an on-site ATM, and some rooms also have a sea view. Mayan Monkey has a daily breakfast, that includes traditonal Mexican and Tex-Mex cuisine. If you are a vegetarian or vegan, you can request specialized options.

Medano, one of the most popular beaches in Cabo is 5 minutes by car, and downtown Cabo San Lucas is 10 minutes away by foot.

Los Milagros is a 4.5-star hotel in a tranquil neighborhood of Cabo that feels like a small oasis in the heart of a busy destination. Despite its quiet location, the property is still within walking distance of many attractions and restaurants. 

The hotel boasts a garden, and a spacious terrace and is within walking distance to many beaches including Solmar Beach, Medano Beach, and La Empacadora Beach. 

All rooms at Los Milagros Hotel have a private bathroom with a shower, while some with a kitchenette with a minibar. The rooms at the hotel come with a TV with cable channels.

Cabo San Lucas is a 7-minute walk from Los Milagros Hotel, while El Arco is 1.1 miles by boat.

One of the best small hotels in Cabo San Lucas, Bahia Hotel and Beach House is a few steps from the best beaches in Cabo San Lucas and boasts incredible ambiance and welcoming staff, who will make you feel at home the moment you arrive. 

The property is centrally located, but has a quiet atmosphere perfect for a relaxing getaway. It has plenty of amenities including outdoor swimming pool, where you can swim up to the bar for a chilled drink and later enjoy a dinner at an on-site restaurant. 

The hotel also boasts a private beach area where you can rent a paddle boards and kayaks. It’s also a few minutes from some of the best bars and nightclubs in Cabo San Lucas.

One of my favorite places to stay in Cabo San Lucas, Casa Palo Verde is an apart hotel in downtown Cabo, only 16 minutes from Medano Beach and less than 10 minutes from Cabo Marina, with all its restaurants and activities. 

Rooms at Casa Palo Verde have fully equipped kitchens, a coffee machine, a dishwasher, a microwave, and a safety deposit box. Rooms have a flat-screen TV, a terrace, and a wardrobe. 

There’s also a plunge pool, a picnic area, and luggage storage space. The front desk can book a guided tour for you. 

À la carte and American breakfast options with warm dishes, local specialties, and pancakes are available each morning at the guest house.

This hotel is a 5-minute drive from the city center and under 10 minutes from the beach. While the hotel is not in downtown Cabo San Lucas, it has wonderful facilities and doesn’t cost a fortune like other hotels in the area. 

All rooms have kitchens, microwaves, and a fridge. There is also a small dining area, where you can cook your meals and enjoy them on a nice private patio.

If you don’t plan to spend a lot of time in your hotel and need a clean, basic and safe accommodation, this is your place. I stayed here once during my first trip to Cabo, and can vouch for this place.

One of the most beautiful small hotels in Cabo, Lumina is my favorite place to stay because of its gorgeous design, amazing amenities, and spectacular rooftop that offers sprawling views of the area. 

Spending 3 days at Lumina at Cardinal in Cabo San Lucas was an absolute treat, and I can’t recommend this property enough. 

Located about 1.3 miles from Medano Beach, Lumina offers the perfect balance of comfort and convenience. The rooftop pool was my favorite spot – it’s such a great place to relax and take in the views.

Free wi-fi throughout the property makes it super easy to work online, as I often do on my trips.

My apartment was fantastic – air-conditioned, with a fully equipped kitchen, a flat-screen TV, and a spacious bathroom with a hot tub, hairdryer, and complimentary toiletries.

I also got lucky to have a private terrace with an outdoor dining area and stunning city views, which made it feel extra special. 

I also loved the on-site coffee shop, and the outdoor fireplace was a perfect spot to unwind after a day of adventures. 

La Empacadora Beach is just 1.6 miles away, and it’s an easy 18-minute walk to Marina Cabo San Lucas, with all of its dining and nightlife options. Lumina at Cardinal felt like a luxurious home away from home, and I can’t wait to stay there again.
