Yes, there’s Uber in Cabo. Uber is a convenient and safe way to get around Cabo without spending a fortune on taxis, or renting a car. Transportation in Cabo can be expensive and Uber can help you save money if you are traveling on the budget.

While you can rent a car, take a taxi, or use public transportation to get around, Uber is the most convenient and inexpensive way to get around Cabo.

I always use Uber when I’m in Cabo, and I’ve always had a positive experience with it. However, you should know a few things if you want to ride with Uber.

Uber is not allowed in many resorts in Cabo, and if you are staying in one, you would have to ask your driver to drop you off outside of the main entrance. Uber also won’t be able to pick you up at your many resorts in Cabo, and you will need to meet them outside. Even though Uber is legal in Cabo, there are some places where it’s not allowed.

As of August 2024, Uber can pick you up at Cabo Airport. Some travelers reported that the restrictions on Uber at Cabo Airport have been lifted, and Uber can now pick you up on the second floor outside the departures.

I haven’t been able to confirm this personally, but the word on the street is that restrictions on Uber have been easing up in Cabo.

Is Uber legal in Cabo?

Yes, Uber is legal in Cabo. Mexico Supreme Court ruled that Uber can operate without restrictions in Cabo and surrounding areas. That being said Uber drivers have experienced harassment from taxi drivers, especially in Cabo Airport. If you do a quick online search, you will find out that there’s still a lot of conflicting information about this ride-sharing platform. But despite multiple attempts by local taxi mafia to drive Uber out of town, you can still use it.

There even have been some incidents with Cabo police harassing Uber drivers while trying to pick up passengers at the airport in Cabo.

For an average Uber ride between downtown Cabo and your resort, expect to pay about $5-10 depending on where you travel.

Unlike taxis in Cabo, Uber doesn’t have a meter, so you pay the price that the app shows you. It’s a huge plus if you don’t speak Spanish, and want to avoid misunderstandings with your driver.

Uber can drop you off at Cabo Airport, but picking up is more complicated. Uber wasn’t allowed to pick up passengers from Cabo Airport, but that changed recently, and you can now get Uber on the second floor of the departures area. Just walk up the escalator and wait for your ride outside. Confirm the exact pick-up spot with your driver.

🛑 Unlike many airports, Cabo has no signs directing you toward the ride-share area. If you walk from the airpot to meet your driver, you will have to rely on their directions.

The best transportation from Cabo Airport is a private transfer, which will pick you up in the arrivals hall and drive you to your hotel. It’s fast, inexpensive and allows you to sit back and relax after your flight.

Booking your shuttle at Cabo Airport

A shuttle is a small van that is usually limited to about 8-10 people. Shuttles pick you up outside the main terminal in Cabo Airport, but you have to book them before your trip.

PRO TIP: If you are traveling more than 30 minutes, and need to make multiple trips during your stay, it makes more sense to rent a car in Cabo San Lucas, because it will save you money and you will have your vehicle, which means you have a complete freedom to go where you like.

You can find taxis in most areas of Cabo San Lucas, including busy spots like the airport downtown or Cabo Marina, but they usually charge high prices, espeically if you don’t speak Spanish and can’t negotiate the rate.

A taxi price starts at $15-20 in downtown Cabo San Lucas and can go as high as $100 depending on where you need to go. If you take a taxi during a busy time of the day or late at night, expect to pay more than a regular rate.

A shuttle is an excellent way to get from Cabo Airport to your hotel and vice versa. You can even book it online. A shuttle will pick you up at the arrivals and drive you to your hotel, so you don’t have to worry about anything.

3. Car rental

A car rental in Cabo is the best option if you don’t want to spend your vacation in a resort and want to take day trips to Todos Santos, and La Paz or even drive further north to Loreto and Mulege.

If you want to visit more remote areas of Cabo, a car rental is a good option, as long as you have good navigation skills and are comfortable driving in Mexico.

PRO TIP: Parking in downtown Cabo San Lucas is difficult, so find a parking area or leave your car at your hotel if you need to walk around.

A car rental company will put a hold on your credit card ranging between s$1,000-$2,000. If you return your car rental with no damages, the hold on your credit card will go away, and you will get your money back.

It’s better to pay for your rental car with a credit card, because if you use a debit card, a car rental company will take the required amount straight out of your checking account, which means you will not have access to that money for the duration of your trip.

✅ A Mexican car insurance

You will also need to buy Mexican car insurance for driving in the country. Car rental companies in Cabo can’t legally force you to buy their car insurance, they also are not allowed to accept US car insurance.

You have two options:

Get third-party insurance ahead of your trip or get insurance from your car rental company, which is easier. Some U.S. credit cards also offer car insurance options, but they are considered a third-party company, and not all car rental companies accept them.

5. Public bus

If you are visiting Cabo on a budget, you can take the Ruta del Desierto bus. You can catch this bus outside Terminal 1 every 10-15 minutes. The buses are purple and yellow, which makes them hard to miss.

If you don’t want to deal with Uber and public transportation in Cabo, but don’t feel confident renting a car, book a guided tour in Cabo.

Cabo tours are excellent if you want to visit a more remote location in Cabo, and don’t want to venture into an unfamilar area on your own.

Tips for taking Uber in Cabo

1. Be discreet when taking Uber in Cabo

It’s no secret that taxi drivers in Cabo dislike Uber because it eats into their profits. If you take Uber in downtown Cabo or another popular area, be discreet about it, because there have been cases of Uber drivers facing harassment from taxi drivers and even local authorities in Cabo.

2. If you stay in a resort, walk to get to your Uber

Many Cabo resorts and some hotels don’t allow Uber on their premises. If you order an Uber, walk outside the resort’s gate to get to your ride.

3. Take Uber instead of a taxi when you can

Taxis in Cabo are notorious for high prices and can spot a tourist a mile away. If you have never taken a taxi in Cabo and are not familiar with local rates, there’s a good chance that you could be overcharged. This could be the case if you don’t speak Spanish and can’t negotiate a rate with your driver.

4. Learn some Spanish

Although the Uber app provides your driver with detailed directions and guides, speaking Spanish could still be helpful, as you can explain things to your driver and maintain a conversation, in case questions arise.

5. Uber prices in Cabo are in Mexican Pesos

When you take Uber in Cabo or anywhere else in Mexico, you will see the price in Pesos and not in U.S. dollars.

6. Keep your friends and family posted about your trip

For extra safety, always keep someone posted about your travel plans. A new Uber safety feature allows you to add a “trusted contact” that sends out an alert when you take an Uber. 

7. Confirm the driver’s identity before getting in a car

Before you get in a car, always confirm your driver’s identity, and make sure that a car’s license plate matches the one on the app.

8. Don’t share too much personal information

Most of my Uber drivers in Cabo were very friendly and courteous. While you can have a conversation and ask for recommendations and advice, it’s a good idea to keep a low profile to avoid any unwanted attention, especially if you are traveling by yourself.

9. Avoid traveling at night

Unless you are traveling with a group or at least one other person, limit your travel to daytime for safety reasons. If you need a ride after going to nightclubs or bars in Cabo, use Uber’s safety feature which allows the app track your trip in real time.

10. Leave a tip for your driver

If you received good service and your driver was professional and courteous, leave a tip to show appreciation. Tips for Uber drivers in Cabo and Mexico are not required, but they are encouraged and highly appreciated.
